What is CompareKit?
CompareKit is an AI-powered product comparison app for Shopify. It lets your customers select products from your store and instantly generate detailed, side-by-side comparison tables — helping them make confident purchasing decisions.
Comparisons are generated using the product information from your store, so the more detail you provide on your product pages, the better the comparisons will be.
Setting up CompareKit
CompareKit uses Shopify's Theme App Extension system, so there's no code to edit. You just add app blocks to your theme once, and they stay in place even when you update your theme.
Step 1: Add to product pages
- Open CompareKit and go to the Setup page
- Click Open theme editor under the Product Compare section
- In the Shopify theme editor, add the Product Compare app block to your product page template
- Save your changes
This adds a "Compare products" button to every product page. When customers click it, they can search for or browse other products to compare against.
Step 2: Add to collection pages
- Go back to the Setup page in CompareKit
- Click Open theme editor under the Collection Compare section
- In the Shopify theme editor, add the Collection Compare app block to your collection page template
- Save your changes
This allows customers to select multiple products directly from a collection page and compare them all at once.
Step 3: Customize the widget
- Go to the Customization page in CompareKit
- Adjust the appearance to match your store's branding:
- Colors — Set the primary button color and text colors
- Labels — Customize button text like "Compare products" and "Compare now"
- Layout — Toggle the search bar and product carousel on or off
- Click Save to apply your changes
The live preview on the Customization page shows you exactly how the widget will look before you save. For a full walkthrough of every setting, see Customizing Your Compare Widget.
If you're on the Starter or Pro plan, you can also connect your own AI API key on the Customization page to unlock unlimited comparisons. See Understanding Your Comparison Limits & Billing for details.
How comparisons work
- A customer visits a product page and clicks the Compare products button
- They select additional products to compare — either by searching or browsing the carousel
- They click Compare now
- CompareKit generates an AI-powered comparison table highlighting the key differences and similarities between the selected products
- The comparison is displayed in a clean, easy-to-read table format
Customers can compare up to 8 products at a time.
Tips for better comparisons
The quality of your comparisons depends entirely on the information available on your product pages. To get the best results:
- Add detailed descriptions — Include materials, dimensions, use cases, and key selling points
- Use product metafields — Structured specifications like weight, size, and compatibility give the AI more to work with
- Be consistent — Use similar specification formats across products in the same category so comparisons are meaningful
- Keep information up to date — Outdated specs lead to inaccurate comparisons
The more information you provide, the more useful and detailed the comparison tables will be for your customers.
